I think your awareness to diversity issues and the perception of black men in our society is a great start. As another resource I would suggest Ralph Ellison's "Invisible Man" it gives great insight into the need for black men to assimilate into a white dominated culture and dealing with covert racist institutions. Your point regarding news is very well taken and right on point. And, it sounds like you are aware that you may face extremely uncomfortable decisions/situations. Having a child is already a life altering experience, however for you, your little bundle of joy will need you to look at the cultural, social, and historical impact our society places on African American males. My son is only 2 1/2 months and it is a lot to think about even as a black woman, who is married to a black man. We are already working hard to identify programs that encourage self-confidence and self-awareness for our son. You will definitely have to look for resources outside of your town. In addition, is important that you are vigilant not only with the type if education he receives but the type healthcare. My son's pediatrician is a black woman, in fact all of my doctors are. For me this is important not only because the role models but because there is a cultural sensitive due to similar experiences. As a result, of the racial climate in this country, my mother and the women in my family were taught to protect the male children in our family. Unfortunately, this is what you must contend with.

Congratulation. However, it is extremely difficult raising a black man in America. You may want to start by reading The Warrior Method by Dr. Raymond Winbush. My advice to you is to surround him with other black parents of black boys. He is going to need as much protection as possible from a world which is going to try to denigrate him even before he reaches his teenage years. I pray that you and your husband recognize the arduous task you have taken. In a society, where we joke that boys are easier to raise then girls to this I say try having to raise a black boy. You worry constantly if the educational system will try to label them even before they enter the 1st grade. And, if you are bless enough to maneuver through one system you simultaneously worry if the criminal justice system will get him. Your lens can not be that of a white woman raising a child but that of a woman raising a black boy. Every day will be joy but also a continuous effort where you must remember that you are raising a black male child in America and this in no easy task.

Dear Rebekah,
I am so happy for you and your husband. What a blessing. First start by giving your son what every new baby needs, lots of hugs, love, and kisses. Continue that throughout his life and he should be just fine.
When he gets older take him to African American museums, read books about famous African Americans, and others. He will be a multicultured child, so do not forgot to teach him a lot about your culture too. Make sure he grows up to feel secure in himself and the skin that he is in.
I pray that your blessings will continue because you chose to share your love with a child who needed you.

Love,

Victoria

Still Figuring It All Out

I'm a new mother of a little boy. Steven James was born on Thanksgiving Day (Nov. 22), and we brought him home on Dec. 17. We went to court on Monday to file our adoption petition, and in six months, it will be finalized and we'll receive his new birth certificate with our names on it.

As you can see from the picture, I am white (as is my husband) and my son is black. I want to learn as much as possible about black history, heritage, and culture. I
