I'm a little confused about my sweet 3 year old little girl's hair.

#1, it keeps changing texture so I keep having to try new things
#2 she's got this band of what appears to be new growth all the way around her head--I thought it was breakage at first but realized there's no way it could be that even all the way around and on the top of her head too.
#3...the kitchens....well, it doesn't bead up, but it's like this 2 inch strip of fro that I can't get into her ponytails.

I wash her hair once a week although I should probably do more b/c she scratches. I can do the hell out of some ponytails but can't braid it/cornrow it to save my life.

any suggestions?

your daughter sounds old enough to visit the salon. most salons have a hair braider. maybe u can wash and condition at home and have someone braid it for u twice a week.

I feel your pain ADK. I have a 16 month old & went & am still going thru the same thing. My cousin is a hair dresser & says their hair will go thru changes the 1st 5 yrs. What products are u using? My husband is half Puerto Rican so my daughter has 'mixed' hair so to speak. I can't use any products that contain lanolin or petrolatum. I checked the local hair care supply store in my area & over 95% of the black hair care products contain this stuff. I finally found 3 products that I use & her hair looks beautiful. You have to know what products work best on your lil one's hair. I couldn't braid to save my life before she was born but w/ lots of practice I am pretty darn good at it now. My daughter's also having the same issue w/ the new growth around the edges & the front so that when I try to make a ponytail it just doesn't look right. Instead I just make several 2 strand twist & put barretts @ the ends to make it look cute. I have to wash her hair like twice a week & I also use a leave in conditioner. I hear that Carols Daughter has great aproducts to use on lil ones maybe u can check that out.
Best wishes, hugs & kisses!

Greetings,

Children's hair tends to go through change some more than others. What ype of shampoo, hair pomades, or oils do you use? I use massage calendula oil in my children's hair at once a week. You want to stay away from prodcuts that contain petroleum, petrolatum and mineral oil as they clog the pores and create build up in the hair and scalp.

My daughter is 2 1/2 and from year 1 her hair texture has become very coarse. In searching for a product I tried everything in the beauty supply store and to no avail. Her hair became extremely dry and brittle especially the ends. I tried Carole's Daughter shampoo and conditioner but that was too heavy for her hair texture. It did not rinse out. One of my mom friends told me about Kinky-Curly products which are sold at Whole Foods Stores. Another mom told me not to use any shamposs with sulfates, because they make our hair extremely dry. The Kinky-Curly line has a sulfate free shampoo, the conditioner is called Knot Today. I used the shampoo first and then used the conditioner last week. Her hair was dry when I applied the Knot Today product and for the first time I was able to comb her hair without a fight. Knot Today is a rinse out conditioner or leave in conditioner. It gave hair hair so much moisture which is definitely needed based on the coarseness. For me the conditioner worked best when her hair was dry. I have posted this product on my blog. Hope this helps........

she is still young so let her hair take its natural course ,is your daughter mixed, there is a new line of kids product out called milk n honey , see if you can get it, buy the moisturizing lotion use is daily and this should help tame the frizzies.

What kind of texture is her hair? Is it course, curly, thick, thin? I think you should start by washing her hair more than once a week, and then try a detangler and conditioner so it is very manageable to comb. You can also start with single braids and join them together so they look like cornrows. I know I don't do cornrows well, but I can do french braids (reverse cornrows), maybe you can try that. Ponytails are great though especially for a child her age.
